Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable batteries are the best !

The last post I made was in May and it was about Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable batteries I had bought in same month. Now it's been 2 months and I still have those Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable batteries in my Canon SX10 camera without recharging ! I must have taken over 500 photos and I can't believe how these batteries are holding on ! nearly 3 months without self discharging.

I won't buy any other type of rechargeable batteries than Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries. None of other brands could hold more than a week. I guess having 3 sets of Sanya Eneloop batteries will be enough for one whole month even if we take photos everyday morning to night. I don't use Flash a lot so I have to check how long these batteries can last with Flash. Even with flash I think these will last longer enough. I'm going to buy another 2 sets of Sanyo Enloop rechargeable batteries for my SX10 So I don't have to worry about dead batteries in middle of vacation or a field trip. If you haven't tried these great batteries yet then you should give a try. You will not regret that.

So I finally bought these Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries for my Canon SX10 IS Cameras. I talked about this before and the biggest problem camera users have with rechargeable batteries is the the self-discharge rate. I have find most types of rechargeable batteries discharge within 2-3 days and I have 8 rechargeable batteries from a reputed brand drop downs to zero with 24 hours.

There are 2 types of Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries. First generation which is old batteries and Second generation batteries which are Sanyo's latest type rechargeable batteries. First-gen Eneloop AA cells have "Type 2000mAh, Min 1900mAh" printed on them, while 2nd-gen Eneloop AA cells only say "Min 1900mAh". But in fact they have the same capacity rating of 2000mAh.The 2nd-gen Eneloop claims to "recharge up to 1500 cycles", while the original only claims 1000 cycles. It's not going to matter a lot unless you are heavy user of these batteries like if you recharge those daily.

It's if you need good batteries for your Canon SX10 or Canon SX20 Camera which will keep power more than 2-3 days then it's better to have 2-3 packs of these batteries. Specially if you are going on vacation a far away place where you might not able to get your batteries charged.

Canon Powershot SX30 IS Camera

I think my Canon SX10 IS Camera has become a grand father because of the new Canon SX30 IS Camera. It's been few months since Canon SX30 Camera has come out and it has already become a quite a hit. Maybe not as the peek time of Canon SX10 Camera. If you are comparing Canon SX30 with Canon SX10 You can notice these changes,

New Canon SX30 Camera has 35x wide-angle optical zoom (24-840mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer while Canon SX10 has only 20x wide-angle optical zoom (28-560mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer. Now that's a LOT ! I'm so jealous about this ..(No offense to my SX10, It's a good camera).
Canon SX30 IS Camera use Lithium-ion NB-7L Battery unlike Canon SX10 which use 4 AA batteries. I have admit this is a good move by Canon. AA batteries doesn't last long. I know this well after using my SX10 for over 2 years by now.
Now price is the funny thing. Canon SX10 is still priced as $539 at Amazon while New Canon SX30 is only $369.
There is a new Zoom Framing Assist button in Canon SX30 Camera. This can come handy.
Canon SX30 Camera is 14 Mega Pixel while Canon SX10 IS Camera is only 10 Mega pixels. But this is not a big deal unless you want to print huge size photos.

So I guess if you want a new camera then go for the Canon SX30 Camera which sounds great But if you already have a Canon SX10 or Canon SX20 Camera then there is no need to upgrade.

Canon FA-DC67A Filter Adapter for SX10

Finally Canon has suppled a their own Filter Adapter for Canon SX10, SX20 and SX30 Cameras. It's called Canon FA-DC67A Filter Adapter. This Canon FA-DC67A Filter Adapter is perfect for Canon SX10 or SX20 or SX30 Cameras. It's well built and solid. The FA-DC67A Filter Adapter is designed to move along with the lens while zooming, preventing vignetting at the wide-angle end of the zoom and providing filter coverage throughout the full optical zoom range of the lens.

Downside of this Canon FA-DC67A Filter Adapter is You can only mount 67mm Filters. Which are expensive than 58mm Filters which you can mount with usual Janco 58mm Filter Adapter. Also the price difference between Janco 58mm Filter Adapter and FA-DC67A Filter Adapter. Janco Filter Adapter is only $9 at Amazon.com and FA-DC67A Filter Adapter is around $39.

YinYan CY-20 Flash for Canon SX10 IS Camera and Canon SX20

Well I know the best flash for Canon SX20 or SX10 is Canon Speedlite 270 EX. But it cost around $130 at least so I don't want to have a expensive Flash for my Canon SX10 IS camera. I was looking for cheaper flashes when I found this YinYan CY-20 Flash. You can buy this from Ebay for around $20. I had bought it from Ebay and received it few days ago.

First thing I noticed was this flash has no weight. Its light like a toy. And there are no controls. You only have 2 buttons. one for test and other for no/off. If you are looking for alternative for Speedlite 270 EX and expect same power then this is not for you.

I don't this gives much more than what you get from Canon SX10 IS cameras internal Flash. Still for me this flash is not something worthless. I'm a Macro Photo freak. I love taking macro photos of flowers and insects. One of the biggest problems you have with this camera when you try to take macro photos is Internal Flash is built too close to the camera so light doesn't spread through the photo correctly. You always get a darker bottom. With this cheap YinYan CY-20 Flash you can get this problem sorted out. Another cool thing is you can turn the flash light upto 90 degrees!

If you are looking for a more powerful flash like Canon Speedlite 270 EX thing you have to look for another alternative. such as

Integral 4GB SDHC Class 6 Ultima Pro Card

I bought 2 Integral 4GB SDHC Class 6 Ultima Pro Card from Amazon.fr though a friend of mine. These Integral SDHC Class 6 Ultima Pro Cards are not available in Amazon.com of those are available only in Amaozn europe sites. I bought these cards to use for my Canon SX10 IS camera with CHDK. I needed 4GB cards because thats the limit you can use for CHDK. Also I wanted to by the fastest avaliable speed limit so I bought these Integral 4GB SDHC Class 6 Ultima Pro Card.

I can't say I'm happy with their speed. They are not faster than my Laxer 2GB SD card or Transcend 4GB SD cards. I don't know if this Integral 4GB SDHC Class 6 Ultima Pro Cards have same speed or less. But they are not faster. I have the lag which I get from my old SD cards.

So Buy a good class10 SDHC card or 2 for your Canon SX10 IS camera and If you want to use CHDK for Canon SX10 IS then buy several 4GB class10 SDHC cards. 2GB would be better but you won't find 2GB class10 SDHC memory cards. few good options are,

Lensmate are the guys who have started offering 58mm custom built filter adapter for Canon Powershot SX10 IS camera. This was a great news for Canon SX10 IS camera owners those days. They launched it in Feb, 2009 I think. I bought a Lensmate 58mm filter adapter in April same year. Their site is pretty good and informative also they have a list of Canon SX10 IS camera accessories available in their online shop.

Their Lensmate 58 Filter Adapter is good. It fits to the lens barrel without a problem. Only problem is it's plastic. It's not a problem but you don't feel safe like a Janco 58mm metal filter adapter. But in those early days Lensmate 58mm Filter Adapter was the only one available for Canon SX10 IS camera Owners. Another problem with Lensmate is their shipping cost and products are expensive than in Amazon. I bought a Hoya 58mm CIR-Polarizing Filter which costed me over $70. Also their Lensmate 58mm adapter is not available anywhere else than their own site.

Now you can find a good 58mm Filter Adapter which is custom built for Canon SX10 IS camera from Amazon.com. It's called Janco 58mm Filter Adapter. Also there is a Chinese 58mm Filter adapter you can find in Ebay. Janco 58mm Filter Adapter is metal and its cheaper than Lensmater or Ebay Filter Adapters. Also I heard plenty of good reviews about it. So If you are looking for a 58mm Filter Adapter for your Canon SX10 IS camera or Canon SX20 IS camera then buy the Janco 58mm Filter Adapter. Unfortunatly they ship it only within USA. So you if you are not in USA you ll need to check Ebay or buy the Lensmate Adapter.

I have been looking for a Screw Mount 58mm Flower Lens Hood for my Canon SX10 IS camera for nearly year now. Finally I found a 58mm Flower Lens Hood which you can use for Canon SX10 IS and Canon SX20 IS cameras.

Whatever the name they have it think all +1 +2 +4 +10 Close-Up Macro Filter Sets you can buy in this price range are same. I haven't had time to test them yet but from the look I can tell they are simple magnifying glasses.

Remember guys these are not Macro Lenses. These are to move your camera in closer to the subject and simulate a macro lens. So Don't expect the quality and comfort you get from a $500+ Macro lens. Also you can fix those Macro lenses to your Canon SX10 Camera. So you have to live with these and a Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro conversion Lens.

How to find firmware version of your Canon SX10 IS camera.

There are 2 ways to find the firmware version of your Canon Powershot SX10 IS camera. Easy way is using the freeware tool called CameraVersion. Using it is pretty easy. open CameraVersion and select a jpeg image which was taken from your camera. it wills show you the firmware version and many more details. Remember you have to use a jpeg image before editing it in any software like photoshop.

Second method of finding the firmware version of your camera is create a file and name it as ver.req then move it to your SDHC card using a card reader. Now press the replay button and then click FUNC Set + DISP buttons same time. camera will display the firmware version.

few days ago I ordered these Digital Concepts Close-Up Macro Filter Set from Amazon.com. For $16.29 They are really good. I haven't received them yet but I read plenty of positive reviews about them from other Amazon customers. Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Lens which is great. Its a great tool but after a while you need something more. Like Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Lens 2.5x lens but with these Digital Concepts +1 +2 +4 +10 Close-Up Macro Filter Set you can get different magnifications. No, this is not a alternative for Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Lens 2.5x lens or replacement. This is just something good to have along with Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro Lens 2.5x lens. After all real Macro lens would be $500+ and also Canon SX10 IS or Canon SX20 IS owners can't fix those real macro lens to their cameras. So this is the best you can get.

42-Inch Weifeng Lightweight Aluminum Tripod

42-Inch Weifeng WT-3110A Lightweight Aluminum Tripod is the tripod I use as my travel tripod. It weights nothing. Also pretty good built. $8 you can't have a better one. But there is one problem with this 42-Inch Weifeng Lightweight Aluminum Tripod, That is you don't have a bull head for this tripod and you can't use one. You have to keep the camera fixed to tripod which you ends your shoot. That's the only bad thing I can tell about this Lightweight Aluminum Tripod.

But I think there are few better Lightweight Aluminum Tripods which you should consider before going for ultra cheap tripod like this. This one is perfectly ok for smaller cameras like Canon Powershot SX10 IS. But if you want to use it for bigger cameras then there are other little bit expensive but better quality tripods you should check. There are several light weight tripods you can buy around $30 which would be a better choice. Specially because of bull head problem. Here few good Lightweight Aluminum Tripods you should check. I bought a Verbatim Premium 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card recently and I'm ok with it. Verbatim not so popular brand for SDHC cards but this one is great. Ok it's not something you want to buy if you want a high speed card for movies but this is a class6 SDHC card which gives you enough power and speed for your normal photography needs.

It says Verbatim Premium 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card has minimum Write and Read speeds of (66X) 9MB and (120X) 20MB/sec respectively. This might be variy depends on your Camera, Card reader, Computer OS, and USB port. I have seen lots of happy comments about this from Customers at Amazon, so I guess this is a better SDHC card than average.

Hoya 58mm DMC PRO1 UV filter for Canon Powershot SX10 IS Camera

Hoya 58mm DMC PRO1 UV filter is one of the latest Hoya UV filters which you can use for your Canon Powershot SX10 IS camera. I have a Hoya Super HMC PRO 1 UV filter which I bought for $60. These days I don't see it at Amazon. So I think Hoya 58mm DMC PRO1 UV filter is the next best thing you can find. Its also only $50 or less, Cheaper than Hoya 58mm Super HMC PRO 1 UV filter.

I have no idea how this Hoya Digital UV filter differ from Hoya Super HMC filter but I have seen loads of 5 star rating for it at Amazon. Also if you don't want to pay $50 for this Hoya 58mm DMC PRO1 UV filter then you can buy Hoya Super HMC UV filter ( not the PRO 1 ) for around $30 at Amazon. I think its a good filter for its price. It's been near year since first CHDK version released for Canon Powershop SX10 IS camera. I don't think even 20% of Canon SX10 users use CHDK with their cameras. Even I haven't used it yet. But I think we should test it because it provides some extra features to get more out of your Canon Powershot SX10 IS camera. I think it's time to use this great firmware. what I want to test are,

Save images in RAW format - I want to see if RAW farmat gives you a better quality that default JPEG format of SX10 IS camera.
Battery Indicator - This is something Canon should had built into the camera. You wouldn't know untill batteries are nearly dead since the camera has no indicator on its own. CHDK let you use this great Battery Indicator Feature.
Exposure times as long as 65 seconds - CHDK lets the exposure time to be unlimited !
Exposure times as little as 1/10,000 of a second - I want to see if this work as they say.

One great thing about Canon Powershot SX10 and Sx20 cameras is both use AA batteries not those Canon Lithium camera batteries. Even Ebay Auctions have these fake china batteries So buy from a reputable place like Amazon.com. Sanyo Eneloop Rechargeable AA Batteries are good I know mnny who use these brand and happy with them. A good filter for the price.

HOYA HMC 58 mm Circular Polarizer Filter :

This is the best Circular Polariser Filter for Canon SX10 IS Camera. Mainly because its great quality (multi coated) and good price. This Hoya Circular Polarizer filter would cost aroudn 60$ but worth the price. Average light transmission of over 97%, giving sharp contrast and well-balanced color. I have one which I bought for 70$ from Lensmate ( you can find better price at Amazon) and It works great ! This one has 6 layers of coating. Great addtion for your Canon powershot SX10 IS accessory list.

Canon Powershot SX20 IS has been launched by Canon as the successor of Canon Powershot SX10 IS. But I don't see many things to get excited about this Upgraded version of SX10 IS Camera. They haven't add too much to make Canon SX10 IS users think about this new camera. This is definitely not a replacement or an upgrade for your Good old Canon Powtershot SX10 IS Camera.

What SX20 IS and Which SX10 IS doesn't have :

12 mp 1/2.3" CCP sensor ( SX10 IS has a 10mp 1/1.7" sensor).
Hints & Tips within the camera's user interface ( I don't like it a lot ).
More screen brightness settings.
Can insert date and time on photos.
Blink Detection ( shut eye )
720p video recording at 30 fps
SD/SDHC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMCplus Card, HC MMCplus Card

What SX10 IS had but SX20 IS doesn't have

No HDMI cable to connect to HD TV (you need to buy separately).
ability to record a voice message to photos is gone.
Shorter manual only 179 pages ( SX10 has 289) But I was told its easy to understand.
Only has superfine and fine modes. "Normal" more is gone.

There are things missing Which Canon should had added :

Threads on the lens barrel for filter.
RAW format
Battery life indicator

Manual states that you must use the Canon software to transfer images/movies from the camera to a PC, else movies will not transfer (frames will be dropped) correctly and images shot vertically may be transferred in the horizontal orientation. So better not Copy and paste movies from your SD cards. I think this goes for SX10 IS camera owners too.

If you are new and want to buy a Canon SX series camera then Go for this new Canon Powershot SX20 IS but if you already have a SX10 IS camera thing you can be happy with yours. Because everything else are same.

Cheap Slave Flashes for Canon Photoshot SX10 IS Camera

In Canon SX10 IS Manual they recommend 3 of their own flashs, Canon Speedlite 220EX, Canon Speedlite 430EX II and Canon Speedlite 580EX II. All these Canon Flashs are superb and work great. Only problem is their prices. all of them are above 100$ mark which might be too much for someone who look for less expensive things for their SX10 IS camera. After a quick research in Amazon I found few external flashes which are not so expensive. But all of them are slave flashes. Prices start from 20$ which is too low or a good flash but you can test thing at your own risk. I was told some had good result but who knows.

Have seem some good reviews about Cameta Digital Slave Flash and its seems good for its price which is around 50$-60$. Canon Powershot SX10 IS CheatSheet is short instruction manuals which is printed double side folded in thirds. Laminated, waterproof and very sharp and clear. The Canon sx10 IS cheatsheet is so much easy to use than the user guide that comes with the camera Also If you haven't got a paper manual ( It was not in with my camera which I got from Dubai, and yeah from a Canon Agent) this gonna be very handy

Canon Powershot SX10 IS CheatSheet is organized and titles make sense. Don't buy it if you excepting a guide book with all deails but if you want a quick reference guide this might be the thing. If you are looking for more details than this short note paper then check this book called A Short Course in Canon Powershot SX10 IS Photography. So far these are the only Canon Powershot SX10 IS camera books I have seen.

I posted about Hoya 58mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filte before which can be used as a protective lens for Canon Powershot SX10 IS. One draw back about using a UV filter for your camera is they would absorb natural light and Photos might not be realistic or darker than you expected. If you serious about your photos same time about protecting your camera lens and if you don't mind spend few more dollars for it then go for a Hoya Super HMC UV filter or for a Hoya Super HMC PRO 1 UV filter. There is like 25$ price difference between these 2 UV filters and my recommendation is go for the Hoya SHMC PRO 1 UV filter.

If you are a Canon SX10 IS owner who use Lensmate 58mm lens adapter then one problem you face is Canon SX10 IS original lens cap won't work with this 58mm Lens Adapter. So you need to find a new 58mm len cap.If you like to keep everything original and branded then you can buy a Canon Canon E-58U 58mm Snap-On Accessory Lens Cap. It does the job well.

But remember we are talking about Canon SX10 IS and Canon SX1 IS here. This 58mm lens cap is NOT a replacement for the slip on cap that comes with the S2/S3 cameras. It is made for use with an adapter and UV/filter lens. I have seen some people complain about this Lens cap after buying without reading about it. The Canon 58mm lens cap fits the Canon conversion lens adapter which you can use for S5is and other compact cameras.

Only problem this Canon 58mm Lens cap has is there's no strap or a string so that you can attach it to the camera. But you can sort out this with Bower CK501 Lens Cap Keeper. You can buy both from Amazon.com for very cheap. I don't think these can be found cheaper anywhere else.

Canon SX10 IS cameras 560 mm Lens is great but its a built in lens so you need to be careful about it. a crack or scratch on lens would be the end of your camera. So Its better use a Lens protector for your SX10 IS. There aren't anything specifically made has lens protectors for SX10 IS camera. But you can use a Good UV filter for this.

Hoya 58mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter could be a good choice for this since you can buy it around 25 usd from Amazon.com

Remember you need to buy a Lansmate filter adapter for this too. Another wise UV filter won't fit in. Lasmate adapter can be bought only from their own site. Their stuff are bit expensive but thats the only choice we have for filter adapter. You can find UV flter and other filters for more cheaper price in Amazon.com

Few days ago one for my friends ask me to do a research to find a perfect digital camera for her. Her requirements were,

Has to be a cheap camera something around 200 usd
Good indoor and outdoor photos
Small size
Easy to use

The Digital camera which came to my mind first was Canon Powershot A580. Which you can get for around 150$ a brand new one and a refurbished one as low as 75$ ! But I thought its better recommend the Canon PowerShot A590 IS Because its Image Stabilizer feature. For someone who don't use Camera for everyday its a great help to get great Photos. Also you can find it for around 200$ and a refurbished one for even around 150$.

HMC means this is a multi-coated filter, with 6 layers of coating on the glass, three on each side. Dramatically deepens blue skies, reduces unwanted reflections on nonmetallic surfaces and saturates colors, especially outdoors. The filter can be rotated to achieve the desired effect. Bought one at Lensmate for 70$ but you can find same at Amazon

B + W 58mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer Filter -

This is a High qaulity Circular Polarizer Filter which is expensive. Can cost you 80$ - 180$ at Amazon.com. High-quality B+W Kaesemann Polarizer is crafted from select polarizer foils and specially prepared optical glass. This neutral polarizer is edge sealed and therefore, it is durable under extreme climatic conditions. The use of this filter is recommended for the most stringent imaging requirements, especially with fast telephoto lenses and apochromatic lenses. It is available in linear or circular. Filter factor is 2.3 to 2.8. Discriminating photographers regard the B+W Kaesemann-Type Polarizing Filter to be the very best of all polarizing filters. They are well suited for applications that require the highest possible imaging quality, especially with high-speed telephoto lenses and apochromatic lenses.

This super Macro Conversion Lens, with Snap-on Universal Mount for 52mm to 67mm Filter Diameters. Raynox DCR-250 Macro Lens is a Great peice of accessories for your SX10IS camera. You are gonna need to have a Flash to work with this and take time to learn what you are doing but you are gonna have fun. I bought it at Lensmate for 45$ for sales price without shipping but you can find it in Amazon.com around 42-52$ with Free Shipping in USA.

You have to remember Filters and the Macro Lens need the 58 Filter adapter to fix them to your SX10IS. So you need to buy the Filter holder/adapter first and better buy like 2 since it wont make a differece in shipping cost. They will come handy at some point. Lensmate.com has good quality Canon SX10IS Accessories but unfortunatly they have only selected collection and prices are bit high. Because I saw the HMC Polarizer i bought for 70$ At Amazon.com for less than 40$ once. But another good thing is they do a quality packing. Package was neat and packed keeping the safty of goods in mind.
