Canon Speedlite 90EX Flash

Canon Speedlite 90EX Flash

Canon Speedlite 90EX Flash is the smallest Canon Speedlite Flash model in market and it's for those high-end compact cameras and bridge cameras like Canon SX10 to Canon SX50. Also You can use it with EOS cameras and with built-in wireless master function allows multiple flash units to be controlled for creative lighting effects.

Built-in Flash of Canon SX10 or even in Canon SX50 is not powerful enough to do advance photography like taking macro photos. So you need to have a external flash with more power. Canon Speedlite 90EX Flash is not the best one when we consider the power but it's the lowest cost one out there and lot better than any cheap Chinese flash units out there. I have experince with those cheap Flash units and those work only when they want to. and After few month stop working.

Canon Speedlite 90EX can be bought from Amazon for around $70 and the next best one is Canon Speedlite 270EX II Flash (Here) which cost you around $150 with free shipping. But if you can go for that one then you should because it's lot better than the 9EX specially for night shooting.

Before buying an external flash better think why you need it and for what you need it. Canon Speedlite 90EX is good for small things like taking cool macro photos and for as control flash if you want to use a slave flash. But if you want to cover an indoor event like a party or wedding then you need a more powerful flash. Then you need to see which upper level Canon Speedlite flash fits to your budget. Check more Canon Speedlite flash units and compare prices (Here).

YinYan CY-20 Flash for Canon SX10 IS Camera and Canon SX20

Well I know the best flash for Canon SX20 or SX10 is Canon Speedlite 270 EX. But it cost around $130 at least so I don't want to have a expensive Flash for my Canon SX10 IS camera. I was looking for cheaper flashes when I found this YinYan CY-20 Flash. You can buy this from Ebay for around $20. I had bought it from Ebay and received it few days ago.
First thing I noticed was this flash has no weight. Its light like a toy. And there are no controls. You only have 2 buttons. one for test and other for no/off. If you are looking for alternative for Speedlite 270 EX and expect same power then this is not for you.
I don't this gives much more than what you get from Canon SX10 IS cameras internal Flash. Still for me this flash is not something worthless. I'm a Macro Photo freak. I love taking macro photos of flowers and insects. One of the biggest problems you have with this camera when you try to take macro photos is Internal Flash is built too close to the camera so light doesn't spread through the photo correctly. You always get a darker bottom. With this cheap YinYan CY-20 Flash you can get this problem sorted out. Another cool thing is you can turn the flash light upto 90 degrees!
If you are looking for a more powerful flash like Canon Speedlite 270 EX thing you have to look for another alternative.  such as
 YinYan CY-20 Flash Specifications -

Janco Off Camera Shoe Cord for the Canon Speedlites 220EX, 430ex, 430EX II & 580EX II

Janco Off Camera Shoe Cord

Janco Off Camera Shoe Cord is a handy tool for you if you have a Canon Speedlite Flash. You can use it as a cheaper alternative for Canon OC-E3 Off-Camera Flash Shoe Cord. This Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord would cost you over $60 while Janco Off Camera Shoe Cord is only would cost you $22.

Using an off-camera flash provides the photographer with the flexibility to direct light from a variety of angles, allowing simple but effective fill lighting for balancing outdoor shots or hiding shadows under harsh indoor lights. An off-camera flash is also an effective primary light source when less direct lighting is desired. Connect the Canon Speedlite flash unit on one end of the TTL cord and the other end is mounted to Hot Shoe unit of EOS camera. The cord can be stretched to up to 2 Feet away from the camera. The tripod socket on one end of the FC-C3 allows the Canon Speedlite flash to be locked onto a tripod.

One big reasons people like Canon OC-E3 Off-Camera Flash Shoe Cord over any other Off Camera Shoe Cord is because Off Camera Shoe Cords are notoriously delicate and doesn't last long. Janco Off Camera Shoe Cord seems good quality one unless you prefer to buy a Canon OC-E3 Off-Camera Flash Shoe Cord.

Cheap Slave Flashes for Canon Photoshot SX10 IS Camera

http://canon-powershot-sx10is.blogspot.com/2014/05/canon-speedlite-90ex-flash.html
In Canon SX10 IS Manual they recommend 3 of their own flashs, Canon Speedlite 220EX, Canon Speedlite 430EX II and Canon Speedlite 580EX II. All these Canon Flashs are superb and work great. Only problem is their prices. all of them are above 100$ mark which might be too much for someone who look for less expensive things for their SX10 IS camera. After a quick research in Amazon I found few external flashes which are not so expensive. But all of them are slave flashes. Prices start from 20$ which is too low or a good flash but you can test thing at your own risk. I was told some had good result but who knows.

Phoenix D92-BZS Digital Slave Flash (60$-70$):

Externally mounted Flash for Canon SX10 IS

Externally mounted Flash for Canon SX60
Canon Speedlite 90EX
Update - Now there is this Canon Speedlite 90EX Flash which is cheaper than all other Canon Flashes out there.  It's not exactly powerful as Canon Speedlite 270EX so not exactly great for indoor photos. But it cost you only around $50 so it might be a cheap addition to your Canon SX60 or any other Canon Bridge camera accessory list.
If you want your photos more cleaner and natural you have to use a externally mounted flash for your Canon Powershot SX10 IS or Canon Powershot SX1 IS. Both cameras has same hot shoe which is compatible for both E-TTL and E-TTL 2 type external Flashes but some models might not work. Canon SX10 IS and SX1 IS manuals recommend mainly Canon Speedlite 220EX, Canon Speedlite 430 EX 2 and Canon Speedlite 580 EX2 for this cameras but also mention few other Canon Speedlite flashes which will work with Sx10 IS and SX1 IS cameras.
If you are looking for Off Camera flash for Canon SX10 IS better Buy one of these Canon recommended flashes because you won't get refunds for mistakes. Canon Speedlite external flashes are not cheap but these are the best Externally mounted Flash you can get for your SX10 IS camera.
Canon Recommended Externally mounted Flash for Canon SX10 Is Camera

Canon Speedlite 220EX is smaller, lighter and less expensive than other Canon flashes. If you are looking for perfect flash for your Canon sx10 is camera this is the one.
Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash -
Canon Speedlite 430EX II is the next one in list of Canon recommended external flashes for Canon Powershop SX10 IS camera. This flash is more powerful , bit heavier and Also expensive than Canon Speedlite 220EX. It would cost you around 250$-290$.
A metal foot with a twist-lock that holds it totally securely to the top of the camera. Canon Speedlite 430EX II can be rotated both vertically and horizontal, and can be operated fully ETTL automatically or manually. A great Master Flash which is recommended by both Canon and also by many great photographers.
Canon Speedlite 580EX II -
Canon Speedlite 580EX II is the most expensive, heaviest and most powerful External flash which recommended by Canon for SX10 IS camera. With a price tag like 480$ it is even expensive than SX10 IS camera it self.
If you are looking for a good flash for your Canon Powershot sx10 is then best choice for you is Canon Speedlite 220EX. Its lighter and less expensive. There are non branded cheaper external flashes but they might damage your camera so be careful when you pick a Flash for your SX10 is or SX1 IS.
